In his commercial voiceover work, male voice actor GEORGE WASHINGTON, III has performed many characters.

As we begin 2025, George has hit another milestone, performing as a singing, large-mouth Canadian bass fish.

In Frito-Lay Canada’s new national TV advertising campaign for Doritos, entitled “For The Bold”, the “I Won’t Apologize” TV spot humorously satirizes the polite Canadian stereotype (always apologizing), inferring that Doritos can make any Canadian (even a large-mouth Canadian bass) bolder. The soundtrack for the national TV spot is based off of Gloria Gaynor 1978 classic hit “I Will Survive”.

Many may know that among George’s many talent, he is also a professional opera singer.

Not only does George sing his solo line, he also sings harmony with some of the characters later in the spot.

George’s vocal creativity clearer matched very well with Doritos’ creative team in this spot to establish a very effective marketing message for Doritos in Canada.

Hear George’s work in the full Doritos spot below:

What’s New? w/ GEORGE WASHINGTON III is part of a series in which MVO: The Voice-Over Guys’ checks-in with one of our male voiceover talents to learn more about a recent media project he has voiced. Here’s what George shared with us.

St. Louis Cardinals1. Can you tell us about a recent voiceover project you’ve recently enjoyed working on? Who was it for?
Definitely the series of commercials I voiced for Major League Baseball’s St. Louis Cardinals was a ton of fun!

2. What was the project all about?
It was six spots; three with me as the primary voice, three as an announcer, and a number of tags about upcoming games. The three that feature me as the primary voice asked me to portray a sort of Don King-esque carnival barker type of character.

3. How did the project come to you? Agent? Website? Past client?
I got this project through my agent Laura Adducci at Go Voices in Denver. Coincidentally, it was after I actually got to meet her in person while I was in Colorado to compete in a storytelling competition put on by one of our colleagues, Nina Rolle.

4. What was the most interesting or enjoyable part of this project for you?
The funky words and the high energy that was necessary to complete characterization with made up words like “Fredbirditudinous-ness,” “yumfoodity,” and “laughtasticful.” “Hashtagulousness?” Who wouldn’t enjoy that kind of script? It was a long session, but worth every minute in the booth. Fun and challenging!

ABOUT MALE VOICE TALENT GEORGE WASHINGTON III

In 2003, I began voicing with a trip to a local recording studio to do some narration bits for a First Union National Bank industrial. The gig stirred my imagination, and I began the research and practice to make my first demos. Working with sources both local and national, new opportunities came over time, and I started working on projects as small as phone messaging to as large as national ad campaigns.

Since that time, I have provided voice over services in documentaries, video games, radio and television commercials, in store announcements, marketing on hold, websites and web ads, virtually every aspect of the voice-over industry. My voice has represented companies like McDonalds, Courtyard by Marriott, Whole Foods, Big Lots, Time Warner Cable, and Lowe’s Home Improvement. My home studio is giving me the opportunity to build on my voicing successes, and I am looking to keep growing with new clients and outlets for years to come.

I have called Charlotte home since 1998 with my daughters Grace, Naomi and Ella, and my son Jordan.

The Voiceover Unconference known as FaffCon was held in Charlotte, NC in late September. FaffCon is a participant-driven professional development event for working voiceover industry pros. Its highly-interactive, peer-to-peer learning environment is consistently credited with helping establish VO-industry pros take their careers to the next level. Prospective participants must meet certain criteria and apply to attend. FaffCon sells out very fast, every time.

MVO_FaffCon9_OConnell_Washington_Test_Caldwell
(l-r) Peter K. O’Connell, George Washington, III, Tom Test and Sean Caldwell, all members of MVO: The Voice-Over Guys, attend FaffCon 9 in Charlotte, NC

Because the education and networking is so impactful, attendance to the event is capped and because every voiceover applicant is vetted to be sure they are a working voiceover professional, only folks who are among the best in the business can get in to FaffCon.

Four members of MVO: The Voice-Over Guys were in attendance at FaffCon 9, networking with fellow pros, sharing their insights and learning new performance and business concepts that will help each Voice-Over Guy build their business and serve their customers. Enjoying their time with voiceover peers in Charlotte, NC was GEORGE WASHINGTON, III, TOM TESTSEAN CALDWELL and PETER K. O’CONNELL.

Oh well yes, a great deal of fun was had along the way too.

ABOUT SEAN CALDWELL

Sean Caldwell is an award-winning voice over talent recording in Tampa, Florida and Atlanta, Georgia. Today Sean serves over 100 clients each month in diverse industries around the world. His work has won awards from NAB, Promax / BDA, The Marconi award, and two Telly awards.

ABOUT TOM TEST

Tom has been one of the top voice-over talents in the Midwest since 1989. He started my studio “Voices On” in 2003, and has since voiced hundreds of projects from web-based Flash animation to national TV spots to college-level textbook narrations to Corporate Video narrations. He has voiced quite a few Telly (and other) award-winning spots in my career, and has also been a much-in-demand voice-over coach and demo producer.

Tom can provide 24 hour or less turnaround and voice over file delivery service via MP3, WAV, AIFF, or whatever you require. His partial list of clients include: USAA, Shell, Accenture, 1-800-CONTACTS, Mercury Marine, United Airlines, Kraft, Samsung, Snapper/Simplicity Mowers, Eli Lilly, ITT, World Book Encyclopedia, Discover Card, International Trucks, Brightstar, Walgreen’s, Morgan Stanley, Allstate, Cox Cable, Kawasaki, and MANY more!

As a voice-over talent, Tom’s specialties include his warm yet authoritative read, which has been especially popular with health-care clients, with whom he has voiced several award-winning campaigns. Tom is NOT a radio announcer – he sounds like a REAL person, talking to you, telling you a true story.

He has a broadcast-quality recording studio, equipped with Source Connect and ipDTL for remote recording. He also has access to several low-cost ISDN studios in Chicago.

As an on-camera talent, Tom’s ear-prompter ability is what separates him from his competition. His first read is spot-on from the get-go, and he works extremely quickly.

ABOUT PETER K. O’CONNELL

Hi, I’m Peter.

That was my “short” biography.

Now, if you like, here’s the slightly longer version…

Before Madonna sang about her virginity, when making a phone call from the road meant plunking twenty five cents into a phone booth and back when getting “on-line” meant waiting to check-out at the grocery store, I began my career as a male voiceover talent and live announcer.

I am currently celebrating my 35th year as a professional male voice-over talent.

As America’s friendly, neighborhood voice-over talent, my versatile vocal skills allow me to share many voice acting styles with my clients, who range from Fortune 500 Companies to companies who think $500 is a fortune. From conversational everyman voice to hard sell straight announcer performances, my natural voice over abilities are favored by clients for commercials, narrations, e-learning, documentary, TV promo, radio imaging and live announcing.

People have told me I am a natural born storyteller. I’ve even won some awards for my voiceover work.

In my voice-over career, I have been fortunate enough to work with brands including General Electric, Kraft Foods, PBS (Public Broadcasting Service), Shell Oil, Pitney Bowes, Duracell Batteries, U.S. Army, Starz Cable Channel, Bacardi, SunSetter Awnings, Deloitte, Time Warner Cable, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), Bonefish Grill, First Financial Bank, N.A., Western Union, BlueCross Blue Shield, Darien Lake Theme Park, J. Walter Thompson Advertising, Cleveland Browns of the National Football League, Harlequin Enterprises and Pathmark Supermarkets.

My voice-over recordings have been heard globally including London, England; Seoul, Korea; the Caribbean; Sydney, Australia; Toronto, Canada; Delhi, India and Buenos Aires, Argentina. Nationally across the United States, my voice has been heard in all major markets including but not limited to New York City; Los Angeles, California; Chicago, Illinois, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Dallas, Texas; Dayton, Ohio and Buffalo, New York.

OK you’re right, if you’re scoring at home, Dayton, Ohio and Buffalo, New York aren’t really major markets but I have spent so much time there, I felt they deserved a shout-out. A native of Buffalo, NY, I grew up in the Nickel City – I even worked in radio there at WLVL, for, like a week. I truly developed his broadcasting and voice-over skills in Dayton at WVUD-FM as a top rated disc jockey and then as a commercial producer for the station.

I produce my voice projects through my audio production company, audio’connell Voice Over Talent which is a division of O’Connell Communications, LLC. In addition to my voice over work, which represents a majority of the company’s production schedule, audio’connell also provides casting services for clients looking for professional female voiceover and audio production services for national and international clients. The voice over needs of foreign language clients are served through another O’Connell-owned company, International Voice Talents.

Yes, I am also the guy that wrote that voiceover e-book entitled The Voice Over Entrance Exam. The book examines the business and performance realities of becoming a voice-over talent and maintaining a career among a spirited field of established voiceover professionals. Sometimes, when I am feeling very “authory”, I wear an ascot around my house – it’s very obnoxious.

After years of giving away my hard earned knowledge about everything voice over, I decided I should be getting PAID for it so I started audio’connell’s Voice Over Workshop. In private one-on-one voiceover sessions in my studio or via Skype, I teach new and experienced voice talents what I’ve learned after nearly 30 years in the voice over business and critical stuff voice actors need to know to get paid voice jobs.

I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Radio and Television Communication from the University of Dayton (OH) – no one is quite sure how – nonetheless the official diploma can be found somewhere in my Cary, North Carolina home (just outside of Raleigh, North Carolina) where I live with my wife and children.

Thank you for reading all the way to this point in this overly wordy biography but now you really need to get away from the screen and go do something more productive – even basket weaving would have been a better use of your time, as opposed to reading all the way down to here, but thanks anyway.

It’s time once again for the Voice-Over Guys to pick the 2017 Stanley Cup winner.

As usually, only some of the guys will be winners.

This year’s NHL finals see the perennial Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins take on the Nashville Predators, who are in their first Stanley Cup Final.

We’re not sure if many folks are just tired of Pittsburgh winning the Cup all the time but there sure are a lot of MVO: The Voice-Over Guys cheering for Nashville. Maybe they just love the underdog.

At any rate, here are the MVO: The Voice-Over Guys who will be supporting Pittsburgh:

Here are the MVO: The Voice-Over Guys who will be supporting Nashville:

For those of you unfamiliar with the Stanley Cup (and oh what fun you’ve been missing), here taken from NHL.com is a brief history of the NHL’s highest prize:

It all started on March 18, 1892, at a dinner of the Ottawa Amateur Athletic Association. Lord Kilcoursie, a player on the Ottawa Rebels hockey club from Government House, delivered the following message on behalf of Lord Stanley, the Earl of Preston and Governor General of Canada:

“I have for some time been thinking that it would be a good thing if there were a challenge cup which should be held from year to year by the champion hockey team in the Dominion (of Canada).

“There does not appear to be any such outward sign of a championship at present, and considering the general interest which matches now elicit, and the importance of having the game played fairly and under rules generally recognized, I am willing to give a cup which shall be held from year to year by the winning team.”

Shortly thereafter, Lord Stanley purchased a silver cup measuring 7 ½ inches high by 11 ½ inches across for the sum of 10 guineas (approximately $50); appointed two Ottawa gentlemen, Sheriff John Sweetland and Philip D. Ross, as trustees of that cup; and set the following preliminary conditions to govern the annual competition:

  • – The winners to return the Cup in good order when required by the trustees in order that it may be handed over to any other team which may win it.
  • – Each winning team to have the club name and year engraved on a silver ring fitted on the Cup.
  • – The Cup to remain a challenge competition and not the property of any one team, even if won more than once.
  • – The trustees to maintain absolute authority in all situations or disputes over the winner of the Cup.
  • – A substitute trustee to be named in the event that one of the existing trustees drops out.

The first winner of the Stanley Cup was the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) hockey club, champions of the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada for 1893. Ironically, Lord Stanley never witnessed a championship game nor attended a presentation of his trophy, having returned to his native England in the midst of the 1893 season. Nevertheless, the quest for his trophy has become one of the world’s most prestigious sporting competitions.

MVO: The Voice-Over Guys’ Dan Friedman, Peter K. O’Connell and Doug Turkel attend VO Atlanta 2017

The event bills itself as the ultimate gathering for members of the voice acting community. Unlike many conferences with tens of thousands in attendance, VO Atlanta says it is a focused industry event attracting talent, agents, directors, and industry resources from around the world. It notes its innovative programs and sessions are presented by industry leaders in voiceover.

We observed over 500 people (from beginners to working pros) that came to learn from (and network with) a variety of established voiceover professionals regarding new industry trends in performance, business and technology.

MVO: The Voice-Over Guys Brad Venable, Peter K. O'Connell and George Washington, III enjoy VO Atlanta 2017

It’s really important for professionals in our (or any) industry to take time to learn from others and connect with fellow voice and media professionals for so many reasons. Two that immediately come to mind are continuing education and just getting out of our VO booths and be around other people. It is reenergizing for voice talents who are the perfect definition of solopreneur.

It was with those points in mind (and more) that a bunch of the Voice-Over Guys attended VO Atlanta this year. From the MVO: The Voice-Over Guys roster, male voice talents that attended included VO Atlanta presenters DOUG TURKEL and DAN FRIEDMAN as well as BRAD VENABLE, GEORGE WASHINGTON, III and PETER K. O’CONNELL.

GEORGE WASHINGTON III is having one tough football season because in addition to supporting his home field Carolina Panthers (who are not enjoying their post Super Bowl experience this season) George also supports the Chicago Bears who are, well, the Chicago Bears this season.

DAN FRIEDMAN and his Tampa Buccaneers are having a better season than the Bears….but that’s about all that can be said. But we are only a little past the 1/2 mark of the season so anything can happen. And this weekend, it better for either team’s sake.

WEEK 10 MVO: The Voice-Over Guys Football Showdown 2016

ABOUT MALE VOICEOVER TALENT GEORGE WASHINGTON III

In 2003, I began voicing with a trip to a local recording studio to do some narration bits for a First Union National Bank industrial. MVO: The Voice-Over Guys’ likes to check-in with our male voice talents and today we talk with GEORGE WASHINGTON III about a recent voiceover project he voiced.

NMAAHC_logo1. Can you tell us about a recent voiceover project you’ve recently enjoyed working on? Who was it for?
Without question, it was the project to be the African American Male voice for the companion phone app for the new National Museum of African-American History and Culture at the Smithsonian Institute.

2. What was the project all about?
The NAAMHC just opened in Washington, D.C., and is the culmination of decades of effort to create the only national museum for recording and interpreting African-American life, culture, and history. My portion of this project was to provide an African American voice for a number of the exhibit items represented in the companion app.

3. How did the project come to you? Agent? Website? Past client?
I was cast in this by Rosi Amador, a friend and colleague in Cambridge, MA.

4. What was the most interesting or enjoyable part of this project for you?
This may be the most important voiceover project I have ever done. To be a part of this museum in particular is unbelievably humbling for me. Because the museum itself is so important on a personal level, I could not be more flattered to be a part of it. One section, “David Driskell ‘Behold Thy Son’ 1956” actually brought me to tears. It was about a painting created after the death of Emmett Till, a 15 year old boy beaten to death in Mississippi for flirting with a white woman in 1955. His mother demanded an open casket so people could see what had happened to her son. This image, combined with the memory of singing a piece years ago in which I soloed the line “Woman, behold thy son, son behold thy mother” caused me to have to take a moment to compose myself while reading the entry.

The entire app, which includes Spanish voices by Rosi, Brian and Zia Amador and African American female voice Iesha Nyree is available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play.

LISTEN TO GEORGE WASHINGTON III AS PART OF THE NMAAHC EXHIBIT….

MVO: The Voice-Over Guys George Washington III Birthday

ABOUT GEORGE WASHINGTON III

I have called Charlotte home since 1998, and my big, blended family includes my wife Katherine, my daughters Grace, Naomi and Ella, and my sons Jordan, Logan and Sean. Let’s not forget the dogs Wallace and Nilla, and the cat Gandalf.

It all comes down to this. Four teams, two games, one night. The winners go on to the championship.

Given the collective college basketball intelligence of the 20 members of MVO: The Voice-Over Guys (we’ve seen a basketball and we’ve heard what college is like so isn’t that like we’re experts?) we have thrown in our “expert” opinions as to who should win each game.

Rather than risk picking 1 out of 64, we like the odds of pick 2 from 4. We feel we could look slightly less foolish (but only slightly).

Here are MVO: The Voice-Over Guys’ choices for winners for tonight’s basketball games. Good luck to all.
