1. You mentioned a really cool voiceover project in your recent MVO: The Voiceover Guys update. Can you talk about who the project was for and where it was heard or seen?

I recently completed a “reversioning” project for the Smithsonian Channel, for all three seasons of their documentary series “Air Warriors”, which is now being broadcast in the UK.

2. What made the media production’s content interesting from your perspective?

This was a series of over thirty programs featuring military tech from almost a hundred years in the air: the planes that helped America win wars, stay ahead of the enemy, and so on. It was fascinating to hear the challenges that were faced and overcome, and how some of these aircraft developed loyal followings over decades of service.

3. As the voice talent in the media project, were there any technical or performance challenges during this voiceover recording session?

Reversioning is what broadcasters call it when you take a program that’s in one language or dialect, and then change it to make it more desirable for another audience. Although a British accent usually plays well here in the US, it’s not the same the other way around: British audiences prefer to hear narration in a British accent. Once you start to change the accent though, you also need to start changing the idiom, too – changing things like temperatures to Celsius, swapping out anything that sounds “too American” for its British equivalent, and so on. In this show, every instance of “airplane” needed to be changed to “aeroplane” for a start! American producers are pretty good at most of this, but the Smithsonian producers really appreciated how I could bring my British ear to it and improve it further, so we collaborated on these scripts as we were recording them.

4. Is there anything else you would like us to know about this voiceover project?

Air Warriors is now airing in the UK on the Smithsonian Channel, which is free-to-air on Sky. You can also watch out for some other documentaries I recently completed: “9-11: Stories in Fragments” and “Great Snakes”, which are also now on the station.

1. Can you tell us about a recent voiceover project you’ve recently enjoyed working on? Who was it for?
I recently voiced a short explainer video for Hendrick’s Gin.

2. What was the project all about?
The project was called “A Short History of Hendrick’s Gin (Told Rather Quickly)” and tells the tale of how one of the coolest gin brands came into being – all in under a minute. The project uses some very artistic, Terry Gilliam-esque animation and traditional jazz music to give a distinctive feel, which was then married with my signature British voice to sell the idea.

3. How did the project come to you? Agent? Website? Past client?
The creative agency came to me directly. Apparently I came to them “highly recommended” by another voice talent. I love when that happens!

4. What was the most interesting or enjoyable part of this project for you?
I always enjoy seeing how things come together. In this case – as in so many – I never got to see any of the artwork or music ahead of time, so when I finally laid eyes on it I had that “Hey, that’s really cool!” reaction. That’s what keeps me doing voiceover!

JOHNNY GEORGE, DUSTIN EBAUGH, MIKE COOPER, BRAD VENABLE and PATRICK SWEENEY were part of a ton of voice talents who attended WoVOCon IV in Las Vegas.

It’s an annual voiceover event that includes an educational conference for voice actors and a meeting for the association’s members.

The association itself is a non-profit, member-driven international association of voice actors that seeks to educate members about the essentials of voice over performance skills, maintaining high industry standards, and operating a private studio.

Dustin is a past president of the association and some of our guys even presented at the meeting (cause they’re all smart and stuff).

We’ve been advised all our voice-over guys returned home safe and unharmed from Vegas and no other pictures of the weekend exist.

1. Can you tell us about a recent voiceover project you’ve recently enjoyed working on? Who was it for?

This was a fun one as I got to be the voice of a car (a British car of course) as part of a local TV campaign for Campus Automotive in Blacksburg, Virginia.

2. What was the project all about?

In this spot, I was a talking car – the voice of a Mini – complaining about being left at home and not driven enough. With Mini being a British marque, they wanted a “snarky British chauffeur voice”, and I was happy to provide one!

3. How did the project come to you? Agent? Website? Past client?

Like a lot of my work, this one came to me through reaching out to an agency and getting on their list of go-to talent. This specific spot came via Dave Perks, at The Perks Agency in Blacksburg, VA, As a British voiceover working in America, they may not need me all that often, so my challenge is to “ping” on the radar at intervals and make sure they remember me when they do.

4. What was the most interesting or enjoyable part of this project for you?

It’s always fun to play up the British aspect from time to time, but what made this one special was that the “Happy Cars Go Places” campaign won a Silver ADDY at the Western Virginia American Advertising Awards this year. I think the client really enjoyed that too!

For those of you unfamiliar with the Stanley Cup (and oh what fun you’ve been missing), here taken from NHL.com is a brief history of the NHL’s highest prize:

It all started on March 18, 1892, at a dinner of the Ottawa Amateur Athletic Association. Lord Kilcoursie, a player on the Ottawa Rebels hockey club from Government House, delivered the following message on behalf of Lord Stanley, the Earl of Preston and Governor General of Canada:

“I have for some time been thinking that it would be a good thing if there were a challenge cup which should be held from year to year by the champion hockey team in the Dominion (of Canada).

“There does not appear to be any such outward sign of a championship at present, and considering the general interest which matches now elicit, and the importance of having the game played fairly and under rules generally recognized, I am willing to give a cup which shall be held from year to year by the winning team.”

Shortly thereafter, Lord Stanley purchased a silver cup measuring 7 ½ inches high by 11 ½ inches across for the sum of 10 guineas (approximately $50); appointed two Ottawa gentlemen, Sheriff John Sweetland and Philip D. Ross, as trustees of that cup; and set the following preliminary conditions to govern the annual competition:

• – The winners to return the Cup in good order when required by the trustees in order that it may be handed over to any other team which may win it.
• – Each winning team to have the club name and year engraved on a silver ring fitted on the Cup.
• – The Cup to remain a challenge competition and not the property of any one team, even if won more than once.
• – The trustees to maintain absolute authority in all situations or disputes over the winner of the Cup.
• – A substitute trustee to be named in the event that one of the existing trustees drops out.

The first winner of the Stanley Cup was the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) hockey club, champions of the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada for 1893. Ironically, Lord Stanley never witnessed a championship game nor attended a presentation of his trophy, having returned to his native England in the midst of the 1893 season. Nevertheless, the quest for his trophy has become one of the world’s most prestigious sporting competitions.
