It’s time once again for the Voice-Over Guys to pick the 2017 Stanley Cup winner.

As usually, only some of the guys will be winners.

This year’s NHL finals see the perennial Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins take on the Nashville Predators, who are in their first Stanley Cup Final.

We’re not sure if many folks are just tired of Pittsburgh winning the Cup all the time but there sure are a lot of MVO: The Voice-Over Guys cheering for Nashville. Maybe they just love the underdog.

At any rate, here are the MVO: The Voice-Over Guys who will be supporting Pittsburgh:

Here are the MVO: The Voice-Over Guys who will be supporting Nashville:

For those of you unfamiliar with the Stanley Cup (and oh what fun you’ve been missing), here taken from NHL.com is a brief history of the NHL’s highest prize:

It all started on March 18, 1892, at a dinner of the Ottawa Amateur Athletic Association. Lord Kilcoursie, a player on the Ottawa Rebels hockey club from Government House, delivered the following message on behalf of Lord Stanley, the Earl of Preston and Governor General of Canada:

“I have for some time been thinking that it would be a good thing if there were a challenge cup which should be held from year to year by the champion hockey team in the Dominion (of Canada).

“There does not appear to be any such outward sign of a championship at present, and considering the general interest which matches now elicit, and the importance of having the game played fairly and under rules generally recognized, I am willing to give a cup which shall be held from year to year by the winning team.”

Shortly thereafter, Lord Stanley purchased a silver cup measuring 7 ½ inches high by 11 ½ inches across for the sum of 10 guineas (approximately $50); appointed two Ottawa gentlemen, Sheriff John Sweetland and Philip D. Ross, as trustees of that cup; and set the following preliminary conditions to govern the annual competition:

  • – The winners to return the Cup in good order when required by the trustees in order that it may be handed over to any other team which may win it.
  • – Each winning team to have the club name and year engraved on a silver ring fitted on the Cup.
  • – The Cup to remain a challenge competition and not the property of any one team, even if won more than once.
  • – The trustees to maintain absolute authority in all situations or disputes over the winner of the Cup.
  • – A substitute trustee to be named in the event that one of the existing trustees drops out.

The first winner of the Stanley Cup was the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) hockey club, champions of the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada for 1893. Ironically, Lord Stanley never witnessed a championship game nor attended a presentation of his trophy, having returned to his native England in the midst of the 1893 season. Nevertheless, the quest for his trophy has become one of the world’s most prestigious sporting competitions.

Scott Burns and Christian Rosselli highlight a battle of the coasts during week 4 of MVO: The Voice-Over Guys’ Football Showdown!

There may be no single individual on the planet who loves football and his Jets more than national voice talent CHRISTIAN ROSSELLI. Voice actor SCOTT BURNS literally bleeds Seahawks green…and he’s seeing a hematologist about it, because three nurses at the Red Cross passed right out last time he tried to give blood there.

Nonetheless, with New York having settled its quarterback situation during the off-season and Seattle trying to redefine itself with the loss of some key veterans in the off season, the winner here is anybody’s guess.

WEEK 4 MVO: The Voice-Over Guys Football Showdown 2016

ABOUT MALE VOICE TALENT SCOTT BURNS

Scott’s recent voice work includes “Global Traveler” for Alaska Airlines, “Taste Test Dummy” for Foster Farms and a Johnny Carson impersonation for Miller Beer. Amazon.com hired him to voice a series of radio and pandora spots for their mobile app. Launch Consulting Group featured Scotts narration reads for Microsofts Visual Studio Curiosity Kiosks in New York. He’s provided his talents for an immersive learning video for Fishy Tales Digital, Inc.

In the spring of 2016 Lionel Trains fast tracked the release the Wabash Bluebird 21″ station sounds diner car featuring Burns as the voice of the conductor.

Twigs Bistro and Martini Bar continues to serve Scott’s commanding yet conversational reads throughout their TV, Radio and Movie Theater ad campaigns.

Other clients include Nintendo, K-Mart, T-Mobile, Skechers, Nickelodeon, T-Mobile, Skechers, Blue Cross-Blue Shield,IBM Cloud, Century Link, North Shore Mayo, 5th Avenue Theater, Sound Transit, Washington Dental Services, Bumbershoot, Les Schwab, Seattle MOHAI, Blizzard, Bungie, Humongous, Monolith.

Scott Burns versatility and range has solved many a producers predicaments. From a “fierce and growly” voice for Bowser in Nintendos Super Mario Games to the subtle whisperings of a golf announcer for Skechers, Scott’s ability to vocally shape-shift will serve you well. As a full time sound design engineer and audio producer for a leading Seattle area advertising agency, Burns knows first hand the time efficiencies and professional quality required from both sides of the glass.

Scott Burns began his voiceover career years ago after a sojourn to California to meet character voice master Pat Fraley, who listened to Scott’s cassette demo, then told him to go forth and seek an agent. Since that confidence boosting advice, Scott has amassed an impressive resume of work in commercials, games and even film, where he provided the voice of Tom Brokaw in the 2011 movie,” Subject: I Love You.” Equipped with top of the line professional recording gear both at work and home, as well as four major studios nearby…Scott Burns is looking forward to exceeding your expectations!

It all comes down to this. Four teams, two games, one night. The winners go on to the championship.

Given the collective college basketball intelligence of the 20 members of MVO: The Voice-Over Guys (we’ve seen a basketball and we’ve heard what college is like so isn’t that like we’re experts?) we have thrown in our “expert” opinions as to who should win each game.

Rather than risk picking 1 out of 64, we like the odds of pick 2 from 4. We feel we could look slightly less foolish (but only slightly).

Here are MVO: The Voice-Over Guys’ choices for winners for tonight’s basketball games. Good luck to all.

[Editor’s Note:] As part of National Disc Jockey Day, MVO: The Voice-Over Guys asked some of the guys to share a story or two from their radio days.

Fully 50% of the stories we got back we can’y publish because we’re not sure if the statute of limitations has expired, questions would be asked (some by spouses, some by the police) and none of the MVO guys would survive a day in the clink. We know this because some have had the brief experience (allegedly).

So after tirelessly editing, here’s this radio story from MVO: The Voice-Over Guys’ SCOTT W. BURNS.

MVO: The Voice-Over Guys Scott W. Burns KRPL 1976
MVO: The Voice-Over Guys’ Scott W. Burns On-Air in 1976 at KRPL in Moscow, ID

I began my on-air career in Moscow Idaho…a 1000 watt daytimer which covered the “Palouse Empire.” The beauty of KRPL (The Kind of Radio People LIKE!) was that you got to do everything, which included turning on the transmitter (after struggling to pass the Third Phone with Broadcast Endorsement), reading the news, pulling your own 45’s, producing spots after your air shift and even taking the rain gauge measurements. Yes, that was actually an entry point on the logs!

Even more fun than learning on the job was having a fully equipped broadcast facility with which to amuse ourselves by pulling pranks on the other jocks. An extremely boring but highly listened to feature during the week was the noon-hour “Trading Post.” Yes, after Paul Harvey news at the top of the hour, followed by another 20 minutes of local news, agriculture reports and a gazillion commercials, the midday jock would spend the rest of the hour reading items for sale that listeners would send in. Sort of an audiobook version of Craigslist.

So for thrills my friend Bill Lewis and I would sneak fake items into the Trading Post copy for the jock to read, then drive down to A&W drive in to eat lunch and listen in to see if the jock could keep his composure. We’d be subtle at first:

“For sale, one all-purpose manure spreader along with industrial pedestal fan.”

Then we’d progressively slip in more stupid items to the list.

“For rent, a stainless steel cheese straightener. Good condition.”

“Lost goat near Pullman, answers to the name “Nipples.”

Stuff like that. It was well worth spewing Root Beer through our nostrils.
