What’s New With CHUCK DAVIS Fall 2019 is part of a series in which MVO: The Voice-Over Guys checks-in with one of our male voiceover talents to learn more about a recent media project he has voiced. Here’s what Chuck shared with us.

Primatene Mist1. You mentioned a really cool voiceover project in your recent MVO: The Voiceover Guys update. Can you talk about who the project was for and where it was heard or seen?

The spot is for Primatene Mist, an OTC inhaler for mild to moderate asthma.  Checking iSpot.tv, it’s aired about 500 times on a variety of cable networks since July 2019. (View the spot HERE)

2. What made the media production’s content interesting from your perspective?

The session was recorded at Superexploder Studios in NY.  A fun session in a very nice room with some good agency folks and a great engineer.

3. As the voice talent in the media project, were there any technical or performance challenges during this voiceover recording session?

Not really.  They liked my audition and made that tone the center of the session,  Of course there were some alternate takes to cover quicker/shorter lines and some “harder” intros to amp up the dramatic aspect.  Nothing out of the ordinary in terms of “extra parts”.

4. Is there anything else you would like us to know about this voiceover project?

This was an interest non-union booking in that it came from a Talent Manager” (ACM) by was actually booked through my home agent in NY, Stewart Talent. Another example of how the lines between Managers and Agents continues to blur.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Recently, long-time MVO: The Voiceover Guys’ member CHUCK DAVIS talked to us about his efforts to update his web marketing with a new web site. Here’s what Chuck had to say…

In the spring of this year, I took a good long, hard look at MY VOICEOVER WEBSITE and overall brand.

It seemed like things were starting to slow down a bit, many of my colleagues were noticing the same.  I decided that now was the time to get things into shape.

The first thing to be tackled was the visual component.  My old website with “The Diver” just wasn’t resonating.  It looked cool but, what did it actually say?  If you have to explain the imagery, it’s not working.

Chuck Davis Voiceover Straight AheadI enlisted the help of Corey Dissin as an objective set of eyes and creative mind.  In talking about me, personally and my everyday life from work to play to family life, we developed a very simple USP (unique selling proposition):  “Voiceover Straight Ahead”. That’s my style, regardless of genre. Conversational, real, accessible.

Next, drawing from my love of travel, especially via motorcycles, we built a visual that uses a long expanse of open road with a reading that carries that USP.  That imagery is used everywhere from my site to business cards to Social Media banners and micro content that I produce here.  It’s gotten great feedback and, more importantly, has gotten great results.

I should mention that the website was developed by VoiceActor Websites with Joe Davis and Alex Sanchez.

Another change in marketing strategy has me working Social Media channels like never before. LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter are all involved. My reach has grown dramatically since that campaign started and…so have bookings and inquiries.

It’s been a busy year so far with a lot of reinvention.  The tree is bearing new fruit!  Onward and upward with lots of new momentum!

Dish_Network1. You mentioned a really cool voiceover project in your recent MVO: The Voiceover Guys update. Can you talk about who the project was for and where it was heard or seen?

It was a radio spot for Dish Network that aired exclusively in Puerto Rico.

2. What made the media production’s content interesting from your perspective?

It’s the first time I’ve done a National spot in PR and recorded with a studio on the Island.

3. As the voice talent in the media project, were there any technical or performance challenges during this voiceover recording session?

Not at all! The producer was very cool and easy to work with. Good direction, flawless connection via Source-Connect.

4. Is there anything else you would like us to know about this voiceover project?

This came as a referral from my friend in PR, Antonio Fornaris. Great guy, killer talent. Thank you, Antonio! I’m referring you, whenever Spanish male talent is requested!

It’s time once again for the Voice-Over Guys to pick the 2017 Stanley Cup winner.

As usually, only some of the guys will be winners.

This year’s NHL finals see the perennial Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins take on the Nashville Predators, who are in their first Stanley Cup Final.

We’re not sure if many folks are just tired of Pittsburgh winning the Cup all the time but there sure are a lot of MVO: The Voice-Over Guys cheering for Nashville. Maybe they just love the underdog.

At any rate, here are the MVO: The Voice-Over Guys who will be supporting Pittsburgh:

Here are the MVO: The Voice-Over Guys who will be supporting Nashville:

For those of you unfamiliar with the Stanley Cup (and oh what fun you’ve been missing), here taken from NHL.com is a brief history of the NHL’s highest prize:

It all started on March 18, 1892, at a dinner of the Ottawa Amateur Athletic Association. Lord Kilcoursie, a player on the Ottawa Rebels hockey club from Government House, delivered the following message on behalf of Lord Stanley, the Earl of Preston and Governor General of Canada:

“I have for some time been thinking that it would be a good thing if there were a challenge cup which should be held from year to year by the champion hockey team in the Dominion (of Canada).

“There does not appear to be any such outward sign of a championship at present, and considering the general interest which matches now elicit, and the importance of having the game played fairly and under rules generally recognized, I am willing to give a cup which shall be held from year to year by the winning team.”

Shortly thereafter, Lord Stanley purchased a silver cup measuring 7 ½ inches high by 11 ½ inches across for the sum of 10 guineas (approximately $50); appointed two Ottawa gentlemen, Sheriff John Sweetland and Philip D. Ross, as trustees of that cup; and set the following preliminary conditions to govern the annual competition:

  • – The winners to return the Cup in good order when required by the trustees in order that it may be handed over to any other team which may win it.
  • – Each winning team to have the club name and year engraved on a silver ring fitted on the Cup.
  • – The Cup to remain a challenge competition and not the property of any one team, even if won more than once.
  • – The trustees to maintain absolute authority in all situations or disputes over the winner of the Cup.
  • – A substitute trustee to be named in the event that one of the existing trustees drops out.

The first winner of the Stanley Cup was the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) hockey club, champions of the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada for 1893. Ironically, Lord Stanley never witnessed a championship game nor attended a presentation of his trophy, having returned to his native England in the midst of the 1893 season. Nevertheless, the quest for his trophy has become one of the world’s most prestigious sporting competitions.

Chuck Davis and Peter K. O’Connell highlight a battle of the coasts during week 4 of MVO: The Voice-Over Guys’ Football Showdown!

CHUCK DAVIS has changed his Football Showdown strategy juuuust a little bit this year – he still loves New England but now has offered a public display of affection for the Giants of New York. On the other hand, PETER K. O’CONNELL still has 3 caps carrying the Packers logo for Green Bay (one  white, one yellow and one green).

With the Giants and 2-2 this week and the 2-1 Packers coming off their bye week, this game looks like a toss up and a good one, which is probably why it will be the Sunday night game of the week.

WEEK 5 MVO: The Voice-Over Guys Football Showdown 2016

ABOUT MALE VOICE TALENT CHUCK DAVIS

“I come from the same place your customers do. A family, a home…a real life. Let me tell ‘em about your stuff! I’ve found it’s really pretty good!”

Chuck is a real, straight ahead performer with a wry edge, a wink if you will. No announcers here….unless you really want one. In that case he’ll hold a quick séance and channel one for you. Chuck came to voice-over acting by way of music, He’s been a professional musician for most of his life and a major market radio Creative Director. Chucks career so far has led him to perform for national TV campaigns for the likes of Osteo Bi-Flex, WORX Air, Cricket Wireless, The US Dept of Homeland Security, Hasbro and Playskool, He’s the ongoing regional voice for scores of clients including The Central Florida Chevy Dealers, Foxwoods Resort Casino, Trump Resorts and many more.

ABOUT MALE VOICE TALENT PETER K. O’CONNELL

Before Madonna sang about her virginity, when making a phone call from the road meant plunking twenty five cents into a phone booth and back when getting “on-line” meant waiting to check-out at the grocery store, Peter K. O’Connell began his career as a male voiceover talent and live announcer.

As America’s friendly, neighborhood voice-over talent, Peter’s amazingly versatile vocal talent allows him to share many voice acting styles with his clients, who range from Fortune 500 Companies to companies who think $500 is a fortune. From his conversational everyman voice to his hard sell straight announcer performances, Peter’s natural voice over abilities are favored by clients for commercials, narrations, e-learning, documentary, TV promo, radio imaging and live announcing.

A natural born storyteller and an award-winning voice talent, some of Peter’s professional voice-over credits include productions for General Electric, Kraft Foods, PBS (Public Broadcasting Service), Shell Oil, Pitney Bowes, U.S. Army, Starz Cable Channel, Bacardi, SunSetter Awnings, Deloitte, Time Warner Cable, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), New Jersey Tourism, First Financial Bank, N.A., Western Union, BlueCross Blue Shield, Darien Lake Theme Park, J. Walter Thompson Advertising, Cleveland Browns of the National Football League, Harlequin Enterprises and Pathmark Supermarkets.

Peter K. O’Connell’s voice-over recordings have been heard globally including London, England; Seoul, Korea; the Caribbean; Sydney, Australia; Toronto, Canada; Delhi, India and Buenos Aires, Argentina. Nationally across the United States, Peter’s voice has been heard in all major markets including but not limited to New York City; Los Angeles, California; Chicago, Illinois, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Dallas, Texas; Dayton, Ohio and Buffalo, New York.

OK you’re right, if you’re scoring at home, Dayton, Ohio and Buffalo, New York aren’t really major markets but he has spent so much time there, Peter felt they deserved a shout-out. A native of Buffalo, NY, Peter grew up in the Nickel City – he even worked in radio there at WLVL, for, like a week. He truly developed his broadcasting and voice-over skills in Dayton at WVUD-FM as a top rated disc jockey and then as a commercial producer for the station.

Peter produces his voice projects through his audio production company, audio’connell Voice Over Talent which is a division of O’Connell Communications, LLC. In addition to Peter’s voice over work, which represents a majority of the company’s production schedule, audio’connell also provides casting services for clients looking for professional female voiceover and audio production services for national and international clients. The voice over needs of foreign language clients are served through another O’Connell-owned company, International Voice Talents.

Peter has also written an e-book entitled The Voice Over Entrance Exam. The book examines the business and performance realities of becoming a voice-over talent and maintaining a career among a spirited field of established voiceover professionals. Sometimes, when he’s feeling very “authory”, Peter wears an ascot around his house – it’s very obnoxious.

After years of giving away his hard earned knowledge about everything voice over, Peter decided he should be getting PAID for it so he started audio’connell’s Voice Over Workshop. In private one-on-one voiceover sessions in his studio or via Skype, Peter teaches new and experienced voice talents what he’s learned after nearly 30 years in the voice over business and critical stuff voice actors need to know to get paid voice jobs.

He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Radio and Television Communication from the University of Dayton (OH) – no one is quite sure how – nonetheless the official diploma can be found somewhere in his Cary, North Carolina home (just outside of Raleigh, North Carolina) where he lives with his wife and children.

Thank you for reading all the way to this point in Peter’s biography but now you really need to get away from the screen and go do something more productive – even basket weaving would have been a better use of your time, as opposed to reading all the way down to here, but thanks anyway.

It all comes down to this. Four teams, two games, one night. The winners go on to the championship.

Given the collective college basketball intelligence of the 20 members of MVO: The Voice-Over Guys (we’ve seen a basketball and we’ve heard what college is like so isn’t that like we’re experts?) we have thrown in our “expert” opinions as to who should win each game.

Rather than risk picking 1 out of 64, we like the odds of pick 2 from 4. We feel we could look slightly less foolish (but only slightly).

Here are MVO: The Voice-Over Guys’ choices for winners for tonight’s basketball games. Good luck to all.

Trustworthy, confident and intelligent. Many times those are the directions given for a voice talent working on a commercial for a health product.

So when the marketing team for Prevagen began looking for their voice, they found CHUCK DAVIS.

We think the team at Prevagen, a brain health supplement that has been clinically shown to improve mild memory problems that occur in aging, did a great job with their voice choice. Check it out:

[Editor’s Note:] As part of National Disc Jockey Day, MVO: The Voice-Over Guys asked some of the guys to share a story or two from their radio days.

Fully 50% of the stories we got back we can’t publish because we’re not sure if the statute of limitations has expired, questions would be asked (some by spouses, some by the police) and none of the MVO guys would survive a day in the clink. We know this because some have had the brief experience (allegedly).

So after tirelessly editing, here’s this radio story from MVO: The Voice-Over Guys’ CHUCK DAVIS.

MVO: The Voice-Over Guys Chuck Davis WQGN-FM 1990
MVO: The Voice-Over Guys’ Chuck Davis at a Live Event in 1990 at WQGN in New London, CT

I spent most of an almost 32 year radio career in the production room. The exceptions being a fun period in the 80’s as a CHR jock and my first radio job as an overnight newscaster.

During an 18 year run at Boston Rocker WAAF, I had the pleasure of meeting a lot of my rockstar heros. John Paul Jones from Led Zepplin, all the Aerosmith guys (many times), The STP guys, Slash from Guns and Roses…the list goes on. My favorite, the most humble, friendly guy, was Noel Redding who was the bassist for Jimi Hendrix. What a gentleman! Oh, and David Coverdale bumming cigarettes from me in the lunch room.

In many cases, I not only spent time with these folks, but also mixed their live/acoustic performances during broadcasts. We released 4 albums-worth of that material!
