What’s New With PETER K. O’CONNELL, August 2023 is part of a series in which MVO: The Voice-Over Guys checks-in with one of our male voiceover talents to learn more about a recent media project he has voiced. Here’s what Peter shared with us.

What's New Peter K. O'Connell MVO The Voiceover Guys

Q. You mentioned a really cool voiceover project in your recent MVO: The Voiceover Guys update. Can you talk about who the project was for and where it was heard or seen?

A: Sure, I was very pleased to be signed as the voiceover talent for SpeedAgro, an Argentinian based company that provides comprehensive and responsible solutions for agriculture in Argentina and 12 other countries. I was the voiceover talent for their recently completed English language corporate story video.

Q. What made the media production’s content especially interesting from your perspective?

A: Working with an international production company, the unique aspect I usually come across is English as a second language. Nothing a little patience on both sides can’t overcome. But I was fortunate enough to work with a production company that has been a long time client – they have always been great to work with so there were no language issues on this project.

Q. As the voice talent in your media project, were there any kinds of special ways you prepared for your voiceover performance? Or anything unique you had to execute from a technical standpoint?

A: Technically, this was a very easy project as I’ve worked with this production house before, they trust my work and just record at my studio in my StudioBricks booth. Part of the reason they trust my work, I think, is that we have always have a very fruitful, open discussion about the sound and tone of the voiceover needed…sharing options and examples and honing in on the sound they want. I try and do this will all my voiceover clients.

Q. Briefly, are there any other recent voiceover projects you’ve done that you want to share with us?

A: Yes, I have a nice national radio spot coming out soon for a big retailer…and until it comes out, that’s all I can say. 🙂

ABOUT PETER K. O’CONNELL

IT WAS 1969 and I was in kindergarten.

Our saintly teacher, Sister Donna Marie, took our class on a trip to WEBR-AM in Buffalo, NY.

The minute I walked into that radio station control room…BOOM!

Everything changed for me. Everything.

I knew instantly my life would always include a microphone.

From securing my high school’s first-ever broadcasting internship to hosting Dayton, Ohio’s #1 rated Saturday night request show on a 50,000-watt FM station while only in college, I’ve been behind a microphone almost ever since.

My audio production and voiceover work evolved into my voiceover production company, audio’connell Voiceover Talent.

There, I voice commercials, narrations and broadcast promos for clients like Amazon (AWS), Crest Toothpaste, iHeart Radio and Duracell Batteries.

In 2016, we O’Connells packed up our Conestoga wagon and ventured from our longtime home in Buffalo, NY to Raleigh, NC (near Research Triangle Park), where my Source-Connect equipped, professional recording studio serves media producers world-wide.

This has been quite a year for all of us.

Movember 2020 Day 1 MVO: The Voiceover GuysBetween pandemics, recessions, riots and elections…it’s hard to consider any other problems that may be impacting people. Or problems people have that are exacerbated by all of the awfulness 2020 has brought us.

But we cannot / must not forget those in need, the less fortunate or those that are dying or have died.

Since our founding, a variety of members from MVO: The Voiceover Guys have supported one charity event: MOVEMBER. We are doing it again in 2020.

The concept of #movember is men grow facial hair (whiskers, mustaches, beards, goatees) and solicit donations to support the Movember Foundation. From funds collected through donations, the Foundation funds research as well as educational and support programs for health issues impact men including:

  • Suicide Prevention
  • Mental Health
  • Testicular Cancer
  • Prostate Cancer

With all that’s been going on this year…mental health and suicide prevention are a big focus – but as we also know, cancer isn’t going anywhere either. Support and research programs require money…that’s where MVO: The Voiceover Guy comes in — to ask you to make whatever donation you can.

Our growers will have some fun not having to shave for the month of November “no-shave” November, as it were, but we also need your tax deductible donation.

Now a little bit about our male voiceover talents who are donating their “faces” for the cause:

DUSTIN EBAUGH

With over 20 years of experience in the voiceover industry, Dustin Ebaugh’s voice has been described as clear, natural, warm, friendly, agreeable, believable and trustworthy. His voice is ideal for narration, commercials, promos and radio and television station imaging.

He takes direction very well and can change delivery according to your needs.

In his professional personal studio, he uses Neumann and Rode microphones, Apogee inputs, Twisted Wave, Adobe Audition, a Focusrite Red 7 and a Blue Robbie tube preamplifier. he can easily do a telephone patch for recording sessions and offers SourceConnect, ipDTL and ISDN.

He has been heard nationally on network television and radio, broadcast cable, MTV and VH-1, on infomercials for Les Mills Pump by Beachbody and on commercials for Niagra Water, Nature Made Vitamins and Rockwell Tools. Dustin is honored to be the radio and television voice of The Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His corporate narration clients include: Ferrari, The United Nations, General Electric, Pepsi, Delta Airlines, UBS, Kraft Foods, The Four Seasons Hotels, UPS, The United States Air Force, Pizza Hut and many others.

Some client comments:

“The on time delivery would never have been possible without the support and help from you. Thanks again for all the extra effort and team work.”
-Joy Chatterjee, Business Manager-Projects, TaTa Interactive Systems

“We’ve relied on Dustin for years, and he’s never let us down. His attention to detail and quick turnaround times have been an asset to our business!”
-Christine Doucette, Director of NexLearn Studios

Our saintly teacher, Sister Donna Marie, took our class on a trip to WEBR-AM in Buffalo, NY.

The minute I walked into that radio station control room…BOOM!

Everything changed for me.  Everything.

I knew instantly my life would always include a microphone.

My Dad was State High School Oratory Champion and Mom had long wanted to work in broadcasting at a time when women didn’t do that so, while my 5-year-old self didn’t realize it, my broadcasting obsession was probably genetic.

From securing my high school’s first-ever radio station internship to hosting Dayton, Ohio’s #1 rated Saturday night request show on a 50,000-watt radio station while only in college, I’ve been behind a microphone almost ever since.

Consistent requests from early radio advertisers for my commercial production and live announcing work confirmed for me (financially and spiritually) that I had a future in voiceover.

That broadcasting and voiceover work evolved into my current company, audio’connell Voiceover Talent. I voice commercials, narrations and broadcast promos f]or clients like IBM, Kraft Foods, Crest Toothpaste, PBS and Duracell Batteries.

What’s New With PETER K.O’CONNELL Fall 2019 is part of a series in which MVO: The Voice-Over Guys checks-in with one of our male voiceover talents to learn more about a recent media project he has voiced. Here’s what Peter shared with us.

North Carolina State University_NC State1. You mentioned a really cool voiceover project in your recent MVO: The Voiceover Guys update. Can you talk about who the project was for and where it was heard or seen?

The DELTA program (Distance Education and Learning Technology Applications) at North Carolina State University recent produced a new explainer video and they asked me to be their narrator.

2. What made the media production’s content interesting from your perspective?

My family and I moved from Buffalo, NY to Cary, NC (just outside of Raleigh, NC) about 3 years ago but it became clear to us almost immediately how important NC State is to the area. It’s important to North Carolina as well because it is the state’s largest university. So knowing all that and then being requested by NC State to narrate something for them felt pretty cool…it made me feel a bit more like a local.

3. As the voice talent in the media project, were there any technical or performance challenges during this voiceover recording session?

This recording session was especially fun because I got to go to another studio. So I show up, voice the script, make the client happy with the read and go home. Easy peasy!

4. Is there anything else you would like us to know about this voiceover project?

Massachusetts State Lottery1. You mentioned a really cool voiceover project in your recent MVO: The Voiceover Guys update. Can you talk about who the project was for and where it was heard or seen?

The Massachusetts State Lottery produced a wonderful series of radio spot around the theme of their “Holiday Fatigue Syndrome” campaign and I was their male voice talent.

2. What made the media production’s content interesting from your perspective?

Whether it’s a television commercial, narration, TV promo or, as in this case, a multiple commercial radio campaign…what always gets my attention is really smart writing within scripts. These spots were thoughtful, funny and most importantly from the listeners’ perspective, memorable.

3. As the voice talent in the media project, were there any technical or performance challenges during this voiceover recording session?

The Mass Lottery spots were a breeze both from a technical and performance standpoint.

4. Is there anything else you would like us to know about this voiceover project?

Well, it’s probably too early to think about the holidays but if I don’t see you, Merry (next) Christmas!

Roberts Auto Services1. Can you tell us about a recent voiceover project you’ve recently enjoyed working on? Who was it for?
I have been very fortunate to work recently with national voiceover clients like Culligan Water and Knauf Insulation. But one project that I voiced that I thought came out really well was for a small car dealership in Albany, NY called Roberts Auto Service.

2. What was the project all about?
In the industry, it would be called an Automotive Commercial, which make it sound fancier. But you and I would call it a car spot. We’re selling cars here!

3. How did the project come to you? Agent? Website? Past client?
Through my voiceover marketing efforts, I gained this agency client a few years ago.

4. What was the most interesting or enjoyable part of this project for you?
I think the reason I am so fond of this spot is because of the visuals, which so effectively let you know it’s a car commercial yet the spot barely shows any cars. This commercial is a great way for this dealership to stand out from a crowded field of me-too television car commercials, where dealers insert themselves on-camera into the spot and screaming about “low” prices.

Take a look…

ABOUT MALE VOICE TALENT PETER K. O’CONNELL

Not many people find their life’s calling when they are only 5 years old.

Well, I did.

It was 1969 and I was in kindergarten.

Our saintly teacher, Sister Donna Marie, took our class on a tour of a radio station, WEBR-AM in my hometown of Buffalo, NY. I was mostly oblivious to the goings on around me at the time but when I walked into that radio station control room…everything changed.

Everything.

I don’t know if a light bulb went off for me or if my 5-year-old hand inadvertently touched a transmitter wire in WEBR’s studio (pictured), but I knew instantly from that point forward my life would always include a microphone.

And it has.

Only later did I learn my Father was a New York State Oratory Champion in high school (seriously, he was an amazing public speaker) and my Mother had long wanted to work in broadcasting (at a time when women didn’t really do that).

In other words, I was genetically predisposed to having some kind of media career.

In high school, I secured the first-ever radio station internship. My college in Dayton, Ohio owned WVUD-FM, a professionally managed 50,000-watt radio station, where I was on-air in my freshman year, leaving in my senior year with the #1 rated show on Saturday nights.

Serving also as Production Manager there, I honed my talent voicing commercials, promos and doing live event announcing. Clients loved working with me and would seek me out for their projects.

I’ve been getting return (and many new) voiceover clients ever since. They enjoy working with me at my state of the art voiceover studio in Raleigh, NC., the area where I now make my home with my wife and children.

General Electric, Kraft Foods, IBM and Duracell Batteries are just a few of the many internationally known brands I’ve been very fortunate to voice for — as well as hundreds of great regional and local brands too.

It continues to be a fun career.

When you use audio in your marketing, I’m the voiceover guy to contact.

The Voiceover Unconference known as FaffCon was held in Charlotte, NC in late September. FaffCon is a participant-driven professional development event for working voiceover industry pros. Its highly-interactive, peer-to-peer learning environment is consistently credited with helping establish VO-industry pros take their careers to the next level. Prospective participants must meet certain criteria and apply to attend. FaffCon sells out very fast, every time.

MVO_FaffCon9_OConnell_Washington_Test_Caldwell
(l-r) Peter K. O’Connell, George Washington, III, Tom Test and Sean Caldwell, all members of MVO: The Voice-Over Guys, attend FaffCon 9 in Charlotte, NC

Because the education and networking is so impactful, attendance to the event is capped and because every voiceover applicant is vetted to be sure they are a working voiceover professional, only folks who are among the best in the business can get in to FaffCon.

Four members of MVO: The Voice-Over Guys were in attendance at FaffCon 9, networking with fellow pros, sharing their insights and learning new performance and business concepts that will help each Voice-Over Guy build their business and serve their customers. Enjoying their time with voiceover peers in Charlotte, NC was GEORGE WASHINGTON, III, TOM TESTSEAN CALDWELL and PETER K. O’CONNELL.

Oh well yes, a great deal of fun was had along the way too.

ABOUT SEAN CALDWELL

Sean Caldwell is an award-winning voice over talent recording in Tampa, Florida and Atlanta, Georgia. Today Sean serves over 100 clients each month in diverse industries around the world. His work has won awards from NAB, Promax / BDA, The Marconi award, and two Telly awards.

ABOUT TOM TEST

Tom has been one of the top voice-over talents in the Midwest since 1989. He started my studio “Voices On” in 2003, and has since voiced hundreds of projects from web-based Flash animation to national TV spots to college-level textbook narrations to Corporate Video narrations. He has voiced quite a few Telly (and other) award-winning spots in my career, and has also been a much-in-demand voice-over coach and demo producer.

Tom can provide 24 hour or less turnaround and voice over file delivery service via MP3, WAV, AIFF, or whatever you require. His partial list of clients include: USAA, Shell, Accenture, 1-800-CONTACTS, Mercury Marine, United Airlines, Kraft, Samsung, Snapper/Simplicity Mowers, Eli Lilly, ITT, World Book Encyclopedia, Discover Card, International Trucks, Brightstar, Walgreen’s, Morgan Stanley, Allstate, Cox Cable, Kawasaki, and MANY more!

As a voice-over talent, Tom’s specialties include his warm yet authoritative read, which has been especially popular with health-care clients, with whom he has voiced several award-winning campaigns. Tom is NOT a radio announcer – he sounds like a REAL person, talking to you, telling you a true story.

He has a broadcast-quality recording studio, equipped with Source Connect and ipDTL for remote recording. He also has access to several low-cost ISDN studios in Chicago.

As an on-camera talent, Tom’s ear-prompter ability is what separates him from his competition. His first read is spot-on from the get-go, and he works extremely quickly.

ABOUT GEORGE WASHINGTON, III

In 2003, I began voicing with a trip to a local recording studio to do some narration bits for a First Union National Bank industrial. The gig stirred my imagination, and I began the research and practice to make my first demos. Working with sources both local and national, new opportunities came over time, and I started working on projects as small as phone messaging to as large as national ad campaigns.

Since that time, I have provided voice over services in documentaries, video games, radio and television commercials, in store announcements, marketing on hold, websites and web ads, virtually every aspect of the voice-over industry. My voice has represented companies like McDonalds, Courtyard by Marriott, Whole Foods, Big Lots, Time Warner Cable, and Lowe’s Home Improvement. My home studio is giving me the opportunity to build on my voicing successes, and I am looking to keep growing with new clients and outlets for years to come.

I have called Charlotte home since 1998 with my daughters Grace, Naomi and Ella, and my son Jordan.

ABOUT PETER K. O’CONNELL

Hi, I’m Peter.

That was my “short” biography.

Now, if you like, here’s the slightly longer version…

Before Madonna sang about her virginity, when making a phone call from the road meant plunking twenty five cents into a phone booth and back when getting “on-line” meant waiting to check-out at the grocery store, I began my career as a male voiceover talent and live announcer.

I am currently celebrating my 35th year as a professional male voice-over talent.

As America’s friendly, neighborhood voice-over talent, my versatile vocal skills allow me to share many voice acting styles with my clients, who range from Fortune 500 Companies to companies who think $500 is a fortune. From conversational everyman voice to hard sell straight announcer performances, my natural voice over abilities are favored by clients for commercials, narrations, e-learning, documentary, TV promo, radio imaging and live announcing.

People have told me I am a natural born storyteller. I’ve even won some awards for my voiceover work.

In my voice-over career, I have been fortunate enough to work with brands including General Electric, Kraft Foods, PBS (Public Broadcasting Service), Shell Oil, Pitney Bowes, Duracell Batteries, U.S. Army, Starz Cable Channel, Bacardi, SunSetter Awnings, Deloitte, Time Warner Cable, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), Bonefish Grill, First Financial Bank, N.A., Western Union, BlueCross Blue Shield, Darien Lake Theme Park, J. Walter Thompson Advertising, Cleveland Browns of the National Football League, Harlequin Enterprises and Pathmark Supermarkets.

My voice-over recordings have been heard globally including London, England; Seoul, Korea; the Caribbean; Sydney, Australia; Toronto, Canada; Delhi, India and Buenos Aires, Argentina. Nationally across the United States, my voice has been heard in all major markets including but not limited to New York City; Los Angeles, California; Chicago, Illinois, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Dallas, Texas; Dayton, Ohio and Buffalo, New York.

OK you’re right, if you’re scoring at home, Dayton, Ohio and Buffalo, New York aren’t really major markets but I have spent so much time there, I felt they deserved a shout-out. A native of Buffalo, NY, I grew up in the Nickel City – I even worked in radio there at WLVL, for, like a week. I truly developed his broadcasting and voice-over skills in Dayton at WVUD-FM as a top rated disc jockey and then as a commercial producer for the station.

I produce my voice projects through my audio production company, audio’connell Voice Over Talent which is a division of O’Connell Communications, LLC. In addition to my voice over work, which represents a majority of the company’s production schedule, audio’connell also provides casting services for clients looking for professional female voiceover and audio production services for national and international clients. The voice over needs of foreign language clients are served through another O’Connell-owned company, International Voice Talents.

Yes, I am also the guy that wrote that voiceover e-book entitled The Voice Over Entrance Exam. The book examines the business and performance realities of becoming a voice-over talent and maintaining a career among a spirited field of established voiceover professionals. Sometimes, when I am feeling very “authory”, I wear an ascot around my house – it’s very obnoxious.

After years of giving away my hard earned knowledge about everything voice over, I decided I should be getting PAID for it so I started audio’connell’s Voice Over Workshop. In private one-on-one voiceover sessions in my studio or via Skype, I teach new and experienced voice talents what I’ve learned after nearly 30 years in the voice over business and critical stuff voice actors need to know to get paid voice jobs.

I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Radio and Television Communication from the University of Dayton (OH) – no one is quite sure how – nonetheless the official diploma can be found somewhere in my Cary, North Carolina home (just outside of Raleigh, North Carolina) where I live with my wife and children.

Thank you for reading all the way to this point in this overly wordy biography but now you really need to get away from the screen and go do something more productive – even basket weaving would have been a better use of your time, as opposed to reading all the way down to here, but thanks anyway.

For voice talents like SEAN CALDWELL and PETER K. O’CONNELLthe shortened week after 4th of July can be a blessing or a curse. Either it’s nice because clients take the whole week off so things a just a little less hectic. Or it’s crazed because clients and their deadlines just get that much shorter.

In either case the weekend becomes a nice break.

But last weekend, it got was event more fun because the two voice talents, who have been friends for some years, actually got to hang out.

Peter and his family when they traveled to Atlanta, GA over the 4th weekend to visit with his family there, staying the week.

Peter K. O'Connell recording in Sean Caldwell's studio 2017While he was there, Peter put a call out to his friend and fellow voice talent Sean Caldwell who has a summer place outside the ATL on Lake Lanier.

Their families then got together for a fun day on the water.

While he was at Sean’s place, Peter even got to record in Sean’s voiceover booth (pictured). But Peter said even though it was Sean’s booth and Sean’s microphone, he still did not sound as good as Sean.

Somebody must have adjusted the pre-sets on the equipment!

ABOUT MALE VOICE TALENT SEAN CALDWELL

Sean Caldwell is an award-winning voice over talent recording in Tampa, Florida and Atlanta, Georgia. Today Sean serves over 100 clients each month in diverse industries around the world. His work has won awards from NAB, Promax / BDA, The Marconi award, and two Telly awards.

ABOUT MALE VOICE TALENT PETER K. O’CONNELL

Hi, I’m Peter and I am a voiceover talent.
