1. Can you tell us about a recent voiceover project you’ve recently enjoyed working on? Who was it for?
…voiced a character in an interactive training project aimed at money managers. I was one of the instructors, Mr. Pennyworth.

2. What was the project all about?
DOLLAR DECISIONS uses an animated game format, complete with robots and time travel, to teach money managers about how various financial and investment decisions affect retirement savings.

3. How did the project come to you? Agent? Website? Past client?
I was contacted by a studio in town. They’ve known me for years. The put me forward for their new client using existing demo clips.

4. What was the most interesting or enjoyable part of this project for you?
I didn’t even have to audition. The producer knew she wanted me from the studio’s demos and that I could act the part of a banker. She knew exactly what she wanted to hear, and was happy with a run-through of my lines in only one take (I did a few pickups of one line at my own suggestion). Plus, the talent fee was very generous.

This year’s NHL finals see the perennial Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins take on the Nashville Predators, who are in their first Stanley Cup Final.

We’re not sure if many folks are just tired of Pittsburgh winning the Cup all the time but there sure are a lot of MVO: The Voice-Over Guys cheering for Nashville. Maybe they just love the underdog.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Stanley Cup (and oh what fun you’ve been missing), here taken from NHL.com is a brief history of the NHL’s highest prize:

It all started on March 18, 1892, at a dinner of the Ottawa Amateur Athletic Association. Lord Kilcoursie, a player on the Ottawa Rebels hockey club from Government House, delivered the following message on behalf of Lord Stanley, the Earl of Preston and Governor General of Canada:

“I have for some time been thinking that it would be a good thing if there were a challenge cup which should be held from year to year by the champion hockey team in the Dominion (of Canada).

“There does not appear to be any such outward sign of a championship at present, and considering the general interest which matches now elicit, and the importance of having the game played fairly and under rules generally recognized, I am willing to give a cup which shall be held from year to year by the winning team.”

Shortly thereafter, Lord Stanley purchased a silver cup measuring 7 ½ inches high by 11 ½ inches across for the sum of 10 guineas (approximately $50); appointed two Ottawa gentlemen, Sheriff John Sweetland and Philip D. Ross, as trustees of that cup; and set the following preliminary conditions to govern the annual competition:

• – The winners to return the Cup in good order when required by the trustees in order that it may be handed over to any other team which may win it.
• – Each winning team to have the club name and year engraved on a silver ring fitted on the Cup.
• – The Cup to remain a challenge competition and not the property of any one team, even if won more than once.
• – The trustees to maintain absolute authority in all situations or disputes over the winner of the Cup.
• – A substitute trustee to be named in the event that one of the existing trustees drops out.

The first winner of the Stanley Cup was the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) hockey club, champions of the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada for 1893. Ironically, Lord Stanley never witnessed a championship game nor attended a presentation of his trophy, having returned to his native England in the midst of the 1893 season. Nevertheless, the quest for his trophy has become one of the world’s most prestigious sporting competitions.

As this could be – following an upcoming referendum election on a new stadium in San Diego – the Chargers last season in San Diego, Brad’s is hitching his wagon to a team that, win or lose, could be on the trail this off season looking for a new home.

You’ve probably heard Brad’s voice at least twice in your life and never even knew it, because Brad’s voice is heard on everything attached to a speaker. One day, you may be near Brad, and then you’ll hear him even without a speaker.

Computer tech, comic book collector, pop culture nerd, and avid gamer, Brad covers about every sub-culture cliché known to man, and can still sound like the don’t-dare-call-him-coolest hipster to ever wear clothes ironically. Now that’s irony for you.

Brad lives most of his life in a box, yet was not actually the inspiration for the Alice in Chains song. That was a point that needed clarifying.

Brad loves what he does, and does what he loves, with his beautiful wife Katie always by his side. Except when she’s at work. Then she’s not quite by his side.

So after tirelessly editing, here’s this radio story from MVO: The Voice-Over Guys’ ROWELL GORMON.

With my voice, I was an actual DJ very little of the time and a Production Director/Copy Writer most of the time. But…

I do remember that first radio job, at the home town station.

There was the time I got my first compliment (I think) from a listener who had come by to pick up a prize. He said, “You don’t LOOK like Rowell Gormon!”

Then there was the time I was alone at the station and one of the two turntables kept sticking near the end of each record I tried to play on it. This was not a prime time shift, so I didn’t have commercial breaks to use for switching records on the remaining turntable, so I wound up playing one PSA after each and ever record while I frantically tried to phone the engineer. Having no luck with that, I gave up and called the General Manager (knowing he also had a First Class License). He drove over to the station, came in, looked at my set up, and carefully moved a stack of 45 records one inch away from the back end of the turntable’s tone arm. Problem solved. I thought I was going to be fired, but he told me not to feel too bad…it had happened to him once before.

Also had a run-in with the general public one Forth of July. Phone caller: “What time do the fireworks start?” Me: “I would guess sometime after it gets dark.” The lady became irate and said she was going to call the Mayor and have my job.

Then there was another caller who phoned in during a BJ Thomas song to complain about that “hippie music you’re playing”. I was in college at the time and told her if she ever heard what the actual “hippies” were listening to she’d probably have a heart attack. She was not pleased.

And one last not-so-fond memory: I completely botched the local weather forecast, being unable to say the simple phrase “a few snow flurries”. It kept coming out “a snoo flow snurries”. My General Manager, who was also the Program Director, called to chew me out during the next record, suggesting I “learn how to read”. Unfortunately, the announcer on the shift ahead of me had done the IGA Instant Money Quiz the previous hour and had left the phone patched into the mixing board….so the call went out over the air under the music. I don’t know if anyone could really make out what was happening, but I do know my General Manager never called me during an air shift again.

Now you know why I went into Production!

His stories are as legendary as his voice-over characters. He’s too humble to tell you just how much amazing voice work he’s done (but we’re not!). He’s just a quick sample of some of the cool work Rowell has done.

It’s difficult to cite my Most Unusual Voice Job, since I’m not “usually” cast as the type of voice you “usually” hear, even when it’s a straight-ahead script.

I’ve been a grouchy germ in an employee training video, complaining about all the things Sonic Restaurants do to keep their place clean. I was a world-weary seaman narrating a series of animatic pitches to the U.S. Navy for disney i.d.e.a.s. I voiced several jubilant “toes” for a New Balance radio spot…did an old coot chicken farmer in a series of animated TV ads for Taco John’s (even sang the jingle in one of them).

There was that crazy Ludwig von Drake-style professor I did in a narration for IBM…and the “real person” old widower character I did for a Hospice radio spot that nearly got all of us in the session a little “misty”. I am even the voice of “The House” in an audio tour of the Vanderbilt Family’s summer mansion, “The Breakers” in Newport, Rhode Island.

Ironically, the most unusual job of my career so far had little to do with my voice/voices: serving, literally, as a “hired hand” on two movies with Jim Henson’s Muppets. The company was using the Wilmington, NC movie studios, and put out a call for regional puppeteers to help with crowd scenes and other work. My previous stint as a puppeteer on a local TV kiddie show had prepared me for the Muppet style of working with a video monitor, and I made the cut with an audition using one of the six puppet characters I performed and voiced on that program.

We didn’t get a lot to do (we nick-named ourselves “The C-Stand Puppeteers”), but were always welcome on set, had our own trailers and everything. On “Elmo in Grouchland”, my visiting daughter was more impressed with meeting “Maria” than what Daddy was doing. Most of us were invited back for “Muppets From Space” the next year with Kermit & Company. Of course, except for any surviving “crowd walla”, anything we said or sang with our assigned muppets was later overdubbed by the Henson pros.

It’s not everyone who can claim they were a voice on the cutting room floor. But, as the Frog is fond of saying: “What the hey….”
