What’s New With JAMES CLAMP Spring 2021 is part of a series in which MVO: The Voice-Over Guys checks-in with one of our male voiceover talents to learn more about a recent media project he has voiced. Here’s what James shared with us.
1. You mentioned a really cool voiceover project in your recent MVO: The Voiceover Guys update. Can you talk about who the project was for and where it was heard or seen?
I’ve recently done a series of explanation video’s about electric cars. It was for all employees in the production and sales departments of a car manufacturer. It detailed the new range that will be coming out this year, how they work and all the advantages they bring.
2. What made the media production’s content interesting from your perspective?
It’s fascinating to find out what new cars will be available in stores this year and next. It’s like a private (NDA’s had to be signed!) viewing of what the electric car market will look like this year – the aesthetics, the performances, the technology the specific functions of the vehicles and who the intended target audiences are. As a car fan, and specifically an electric car fan, it felt quite special to see the big reveal before the actual big reveal 🙂
3. As the voice talent in the media project, were there any technical or performance challenges during this voiceover recording session?
It wasn’t the usual explanation video with a talking voice over an animation. I dubbed the voice of an actor onscreen. It’s known as ADR. This is technically quite challenging from the VO point of view. You get cued into recording with beeps in your ears via your headphones and then of course you have speak along with the mouth movements of the actor…which of course is both infuriating when it goes wrong ( you have to keep redoing the recording as initially you speak too fast or too slow and then you mess up the lines) and extremely satisfying when it goes right (you hear the beeps, you say the line and boom, it’s a home run on the first try !). It’s the same with cartoon work…following the mouth movements of the animated character. Slow but rewarding 🙂
4. Is there anything else you would like us to know about this voiceover project?
VO work can be challenging and rewarding in equal measure. This project was a perfect blend of both.
